Michel Fokine or Mikhail Mikhailovich Fokin
Fokine was born 1880 in St.Petersburg, Russia. Accepted to study ballet at St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School when he was 9. Stage debut in Paquita at Mariinsky Theatre on his 18th birthday (1898.) 4 years later he was teaching for that school. Was with Diaghilev Ballet. In later years he performed with his wife Vera Fokine. (According to Maria Dare it was a very talented family - talents extending to music as well as dance.)
Best known as a choreographer. Many of his works are performed today as "the classics." Early works include Acis, Galatea (1905) and The Dying Swan (1907), Le Pavillon d'Armide, Le Spectre de la Rose, Le Carnaval, Petrushka. Fokine choreographed Chopiniana (later revised as Les Sylphides) and The Firebird.
In 1918 Fokine moved to Sweden, later to New York City USA, becoming a USA citizen in 1932. Fokine died in New York on August 22, 1942.
